Eye, close-up

A few Christmas ago I decided to surprise my family by gifting them individual paintings of each other’s eyes. Painting them was a real joy, as I got to play with colours and mark making on a small, intimate scale. I also loved seeing how much likeness I could get by focusing on a detail: fascinating to see that one feature holds so much of the person’s personality (they say eyes are a window to the soul, don’t they?).

Starting from: £80 (if you’d like to commission more than one, I’m happy to work out a discount for you)

Perfect for: either as a gift for the people you love (I made one of my eye for my grandma for her to have a little bit of me with her) or for yourself (so you can have a painted reminder of your precious people)

What I need from you: a few clear close up of an eye (to keep it a surprise, feel free to make up the most unusual excuses! I had some friends pretending it was for a medical study)

Small gouache painting

I love painting with gouache: this medium offers the most vibrant colours and I love using it on yupo paper, a surface that is very smooth and thicker than normal paper. The versatility of the medium allows me to play with textures and mark making, to go beyond a straight representation of the given reference and create a painting that will take you back to this precious moment you want me to paint.

Starting from: £250 (small format / A6 to A5 / 10x15cm to 15x21cm)

Perfect for: a small intimate gift to a loved one or yourself, with a bright and modern approach to portrait painting. I paint to standard sizes so you can easily find the perfect frame; gives you the options to hang it on a wall or display it on a shelf or bed side table.

What I need from you: gouache is the perfect medium for colourful references. The higher the reference quality, the better, but as we’re talking small format here I can also work from smaller resolution.

Small oil painting

Small oil paintings on yupo paper or linen, it inspires a level of abstraction in the colours and mark making that I particularly love.

Starting from: £350 (small format / A6 to A5 / 10x15cm to 15x21cm)

Perfect for: a small intimate painting in oils, perfect gift for a loved one or yourself. Painted on yupo paper to standard sizes so you can easily find the perfect frame; gives you the options to hang it on a wall or display it on a shelf or bed side table.

What I need from you: the best references are the ones with a clear light and shadow pattern (especially the face being well lit). The higher the reference quality, the better, but as we’re talking small format here I can also work from smaller resolution.

Medium oil painting

Medium painting in oils on linen, this scale allows me to get a likeness with the portraits while playing with abstraction and atmosphere. Formats vary as to fit the composition.

Starting from: £600 (around 25x30cm)

Perfect for: a gift to a loved one or yourself, perfect format to hung on a wall while keeping an intimate feel to it. The painting can be mounted on board and surrounded by a mount or directly stretched and framed.

What I need from you: high quality references are very important at this scale so I can get the best likeness. And obviously well lit faces are the best to work with!

Big oil painting

I love working on such big scale that invites me to play with various level of abstraction. Going further than just a copy of the photograph, I’ll use the reference as inspiration to create a proper original oil painting in its own right, with colours and mark making tailored to the mood you’re looking for. Painted on linen, it’ll be perfect stretched and framed.

Starting from: £800 (40x30cm to 60x40cm)

Perfect for: a significant gift to a loved one or yourself, perfect way to celebrate a precious moment or person. The size is perfect to hung on the wall and with an impact.

What I need from you: for a close-up portrait, I’d need the highest resolution possible, with the subject well lit and in good focus as to get the most details when it comes to the likeness and colours. Let me know if you’re looking at a particular mood, or if the background and location are key elements of your paintings too, so I can play with the level of details and abstraction.

Process

Get in touch! Whereas you already have a firm idea of what you want or just an intuition, emailing me is the best way to start. If you’re not sure about which reference to paint, send me up to 10 different photographs so I can let you know which ones would work best, and guide you on the size and medium I seem more fitted, with a quote for those different options.

Once we’ve agreed on a direction and a price I’ll ask for a 30% deposit and make a start. It usually takes me a month to get the painting finished and ready for you.

If you’d like, I’m happy to take care of the stretching and framing, and I’ll charge cost price for that. If you’d rather just have the painting and take it to a framer yourself that’s also perfectly fine.

When the painting is done, I’ll send you a picture if you’d like (unless you’d rather keep the surprise!) and ask for the remaining of the payment ans shipping fees (track & sign).

In conclusion

Those are some example of recent commissions, I hope they help you get inspiration on what I do and a better idea of what the process is. Each piece is a new adventure and I love finding the painted language that will suits it best.

If you know my work, you also know I love experimenting in various directions: working from a black & white reference and making up the colours; collaging various memories; exploring landscapes; abstraction…

So the main thing is: do not hesitate to contact me to discuss any project, or start of an idea! I’d be delighted to get the conversation going!

Thank you so much for your interest, I’m looking forward to hearing from you!
